Special Occasion Gowns for Your
Precious Child
Special Occasions
Whether you call it a
christening, baptism, dedication, naming ceremony or a baby blessing, it
will be a special day for you and your little girl. There are a few
things to keep in mind when selecting her apparel. The first
consideration is any requirements made by the officiator of the
ceremony. Usually the main concern is whether all white clothing is
required or if off-white and colors are acceptable. Once you have that
information you can think about a few other things.
Color
What is your preference for
color? For white, you may want to use a pure white linen, cotton or
polyester. Blends of these materials are used create fabrics from sheer
organza with a slight sheen to weaves that imitate the appearance of
silk. Cotton and poly blend create a fabric similar a good quality men’s
shirt. Other fabrics such as satin or silk give a different cast. Silk,
being a natural fiber has a warmth to the color, although it is usually
considered to be white-such as brides’ wedding gowns in white silk.
Silk is sometimes considered to be an ivory because of the warmth of the
color of silk. However, it is not a beige in any sense. The
possibilities are endless.
Style
The style of the gown is your
own personal choice. It is like choosing your own wedding dress. What
suits you and your taste is the “correct and proper” choice. If you
prefer something simple, consider gowns by
Fantaisie Kids or
Feltman
Brothers. Both have beautiful white on white embroidery, pin tucks and
smocked bodices made from cotton and cotton blends. Feltman Brothers is
also known for delicate lace insets. A very simple style can be done in
an elegant manner.
If you want a style that is
elaborate you will want to look at the gowns by
Isabel Garreton and
Karrenina. They both offer a variety of fabrics including silk with
smocking, light and heavy laces and embroidery. If you want some color,
consider Biscotti’s gowns with made with colorful embroidery. Or just a
touch of color like the styles from
Kissy, Kissy.
Length
Cathedral length gowns are
beautiful but if your daughter is older she might get frustrated if she
can’t get down and walk or crawl. You might want to consider a short or
tea-length dress. Another option is a detachable skirt. The long skirt
buttons on for the ceremony then can be removed to reveal a short
dress.
Bonnets
Many gowns come with a
matching bonnet. Bonnets are typically one of two styles. Some have a
ruffle that frames the baby’s face. Others are smaller and just cover
the baby’s ears. If you don’t care for a bonnet, a simple headband or
wreath of flowers will be just the right thing. A wreath of natural or
silk flowers is lovely but a little harder to keep on baby’s head if it
isn’t the right size. One that comes a little down on the forehead is
better than trying to control a halo sitting on the top of the head.
Fitting
Fitting your precious child’s
gown doesn’t need to be a challenge. Taking measurements in advance can
be helpful. The key measurement is around the chest just under the
arms. It is easier to measure an article of clothing that fits your baby comfortably
instead of trying to measure her. Different styles offer some
flexibility. A smocked bodice comfortably stretches a little. A
gown with a tie in back can be used to make a more snug fit on a slender
baby. Buttons can be moved a bit. If you little girl has chubby arms,
you might want a sleeve that has elastic. Your mind will be eased
if you have a full understanding of the store’s return policy. Know
before hand if returns are allowed and for how long.
Remember you want a gown that
you love but that will be comfortable for your baby. If your baby
is comfortable, you will both be happy. You will have beautiful memories
and a lovely heirloom gown to enjoy for years to come.
