Christening Suit Tips

Special Occasion Suits for Your Precious Little Boy

Special Occasion
You have a baby boy?  Congratulations!  Now you to plan for your precious child’s special day.  Whether you call it a baptism, christening, baby blessing or a dedication, you will want his little outfit to be perfect.  There are several things to consider as you start.  First you will need to know if the officiator has any restricts or requirements.  Usually the concern is if white clothing is mandatory or if ivory and colors are acceptable.

Color
If you want a pure white outfit you will want to look for cotton or cotton blends fabrics.  Either is fresh and sweet.  Silk is usually an ivory color.  It is the traditional fabric of wedding gowns.  Man made fabrics are  nice and offer a variety of fabrics.  If you like a fabric with a slight sheen you will want a man made fabric.  Another possibility is a man made fabric that imitates silk but is white.

Styles
There are many styles available for boys.  A popular style is a little cotton or cotton blend romper which is a one piece suit.  These are accentuated with smocking, pin tucks and embroidery.  The embroidery is masculine geometric patterns and leaves.  If these things appeal to you, consider Feltman Brothers and Petit Ami.  Short coveralls (shortalls also called John Johns) or long leg coveralls (longalls) with a little shirt are nice.  A little older boy looks nice with button on shorts and a shirt.  Button-on knickers are so cute.  Sailor styles are darling.  Little boy’s outfits are adorned with bow ties and vests.

If you prefer the richness of silk, look at Cora and Isabel Garreton.  If you want something very simple, look at Luli & Me by Casero.  Older boys will look handsome in an Eton suit.  Typically the suits are a collarless jacket and shorts.  They look very nice with a shirt with a peter pan collar and a bow tie. A gown for a boy is very traditional.  The collar and sleeve are simple and masculine.  Some gowns have a detachable, button-on skirt.  This is nice for the ceremony and allows your baby to crawl or walk comfortable afterwards.  A knit outfit is perfect for chilling days.  Sophie Dess is perfect.  They are rompers with long or short legs and buntings.  Some have just a touch of color trim.

Hats
Do you like hats?  Some outfits have matching caps.  These came in very styles such as caps that tie under the chin.  Some have visors and some don’t.  Berets are fun.

Fitting
Fitting your precious baby boy won’t be difficult.  Start out with his weight and a few measurements.  The two main measurements are around the chest (right under the arms) and from the shoulder seam to the crotch.  It is easier to measure an article of clothing that fits the baby comfortably instead of trying to measure a wiggly baby.  Alterations can be made by moving buttons on the shoulders of overalls and button on shorts or pants.  Keep in mind that if your little boy had chubby legs you will want to watch for elastic legs that are too snug.  A larger size will give him more room.  Your mind will be eased if you have a full understanding of the store’s return policy.  Know before hand if returns are allowed and for how long.

Remember you want an outfit that you love but that will be comfortable for your baby.  If your baby is comfortable you will both be happy.  You will have beautiful memories and a lovely heirloom gown to enjoy for years to come.
